Leadership is…Exact Example.

The three rules of being a leader are example, example, example. In that order.  So many people want to be leaders but they don’t want to do the same things that they ask others to do. They aren’t willing to pay the price. We’ve all met the person who says, “I need this to be done, but I don’t want to do it myself, so go do it and come back and tell me all about it.” This is no way to lead. The lesson of leadership is this: you can’t be a great leader until you are a great follower.

We all must learn to follow with exactness. There is power in exactness. Some people want to pick and choose. The buffet style of leading and following does not work. Picking and choosing your rules shows weakness and lack of self-mastery. If you want to be a great leader, you have to become a great follower—a person capable of following with exactness.
